The Friends purpose is to maintain and develop the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens as an outstanding Guilfoyle Garden.

The Friends of the Botanic Gardens was formed in 1989. Since then, the Friends have restored the fountain, the gas lights, the sundial and the fernery.

The maintenance and enhancement of Guilfoyle's garden is their first priority. To this end they have created a database of the major plantings and created a labelling protocol. They also encourage greater public participation within the gardens.

The Friends latest success was to instigate the employment of a curator, this is a most significant milestone for the future security of the gardens future.

The Friends groups within botanic gardens are a major asset never to be undervalued. They have passion and they have resources for funding not always obtainable by government bodies.

A history of the Friends has been compiled by our historian Marie Johnston, this is an ongoing project as years go by.  Click here to view this report of the Friends from 1989 - 2006

Membership is a very important asset in the endeavours of the Friends groups, not only for their personal involvement but in your show of support. This support is a major component in raising funds.

Become a Friend by filling out the attached membership form and post to our Treasurer.

Potting Days

The Friends hold a 'Plant day' once a month. On this day we invite all members and other interested people to attend. You will learn about plants and their care, help with small gardening jobs around the gardens along with potting up cuttings and seedlings.

Our Curator and staff manage these days, so along with their expertise and maybe the help of TAFE or other gardening bodies much can be learned.

Come along and enjoy the friendship of others and a cuppa.

There will be a new diary of dates laid out after the  AGM each year and these are posted on the Web site

Guided Walks

The Friends also conduct guided walks every second and fourth Sunday of the month commencing at 2.30pm from the main gates in Cockman Street.

If you are interested in becoming a guide please send your contact details to the Friends either by email or post. You will receive training by our very team.
